I've acquired a genuine set of STABO harness for my fellow teammate who claims his mysterious need for emergency extraction methods. So much of a Japanese, he seems so fascinated by the idea of hanging himself. .....Jokes aside, STABOs are relatively hard to find militaria items with plenty of SF history within them. So i decided to dedicate this article for our brave heroes of U.S. special forces.特殊エマージェンシーエクストラクション（緊急脱出）装備の必要性を可思議にも訴え続けるチームメイトのために、実物のスターボハーネスを入手した。さすがは日本人らしく、自身を吊り下げることには特別の興味を抱いているようだ、、、。
そんなジョークはいいとして、スターボは希少なミリタリアアイテムであり、それ自体が特殊部隊の歴史を体言する品である。ゆえに自由主義の最前線、むしろその前線のむこうかなたで命を賭ける勇敢な米特殊部隊員達に敬意を表する意味でも今回の記事を書いた。


STABO as in "STABle Orientation" Extraction Harness was originally developed by an SF Sgt serving 5th Special Forces group in Vietnam. Due to the nature of special forces missions deep inside hostile controlled areas, operators needed unconventional extraction methods. Since the introduction of helicopters, air-lifting/hoisting has been among the most preferred methods, because it is fast, and it does not require operators to find topographically (as well as strategically )clear and safe LZ for their extractions. "Silently get in, get the job done and quickly get out" has been an SF operator's routine since then.
STABOつまり "STABle Orientation"（安定化構造）脱出ハーネスは、ベトナム戦争中、第５特殊部隊グループに所属していたグリーンベレー軍曹によって開発された。敵陣の奥深くに潜入し活動する特殊作戦の都合上、特殊部隊員たちは、通常と異なる特殊な脱出方法と装備を常に必要としていた。戦場におけるヘリコプターの登場により、空中懸架つまり吊り上げがもっとも好ましいとされた。 もっとも迅速に脱出できる方法であり、なによりヘリコプターに着陸を要求しないため、地理的にも戦略的にも安全なLZ（ランディングゾーン）を見つける必要性も無く、以降、「音も無く潜入し、仕事をやってのけて、迅速にばっくれる」というスタイルは、特殊部隊員にとっての日常となった。
In early stages of Vietnam war, SF soldiers were issued extraction harnesses called "Mcguire Rigs",
Mcguire Rig was dedicated harness for air-lifting extraction, carried inside operators backpacks until it's needed.
However it was cumbersome to carry separately and to put on quickly, most importantly it was unstable when airborne and not a safe harness to lift a wounded or unconscious personal. SF sgt experienced a tragic loss of his wounded teammate falling out of Mcguire rig during the air-lift extraction. As he returned to his base, he designed the STABO harness on a piece of napkin, made a sample at a parachute repairing bunker, then went in presenting it at higher command office. This marked the birth of STABO harness.戦争の初期段階においては "マクガイア・リグ "と呼ばれたハーネスが支給されていた。 マクガイア・リグは空中懸架脱出専用のハーネスセットであり、使用時までバックパックに入れて携行されていた。しかしこのハーネスは戦闘装備とは別に携行するため余計な重量・質量であり、装着にも手間がかかった。なにより特に空挺訓練を受けていない者や負傷などにより意識の無い者を吊り上げると、空中で非常に不安定となる造りをしていた。 スターボ考案者であるグリーンベレー軍曹は、負傷して意識の無い戦友が吊り上げ脱出中にマクガイア・リグから空中に放り出され死亡するという辛い経験をしていた。 基地に帰還すると彼はすぐさま食堂の紙ナプキンの上にSTABO(安定化構造)ハーネスのアイデアをデザインしたという。部隊内のパラシュート補修施設（特殊部隊＝空挺レンジャー部隊）にて、ミシンを使ってサンプルを製作し、自身でテストをした後上層部へ提案したという。スターボハーネスはこうして誕生した。

On top of the superior air-borne stability and safety, STABO harness also serves as a part of load bearing kit as it is integrated with general issue pistol belt. Operators can assemble various pouches directly on the system, go in to the missions with the harness always worn and ready for extraction.
While there were numbers of STABOs unofficially produced and used by SF personnels in Vietnam, Special Operations Command also ordered batches of STABO officially through CISO(Counter Insergency Support Office) procurement. Many were manufactured in Okinawa then sent to Vietnam.
安全性、空中での挙動安定の他スターボハーネスが優れている点として、ハーネス自体が戦闘装備の一部であるヨーク（サスペンダー）として、ピストルベルトと併用して装備するようデザインされていることが挙げられる。隊員は各種ポーチ類を通常装備のようにベルトに装着し、すなわち常にハーネスを装着した状態、いつでも緊急脱出できる常態で作戦の遂行が可能である。　ベトナム戦時中多くのスターボハーネスが、部隊ごとあるいは小隊、個人規模で非公式に製作され、使用されていたが、特殊作戦司令部はCISO(Counter Insergency Support Office＝対叛乱勢力戦サポート室)の公的予算を通じて多数のスターボを沖縄にて製作、ベトナムに送っている。

There are generally 3types of STABO harness known. 1st pattern harness with pistol belt stitched and fixed on to harness, 2nd pattern allowed the choice of pistol belt. This idea was dropped in the post-war 3rd pattern harnesses, which went back on permanently fixing the pistol belt on to the harness but with added form pad layers on sholder-part straps for improved comfort when used as load-carrying platform. The example shown here is the post-Nam 3rd pattern harness used all through the 70's to 2007. This very example comes with what seems to be an LC-1 pistol belt with brass closure, but the make year is 95' when LC-2 and LC-2A belts were already available. In fact, this belt is specially made LC-2A but with LC-1 brass metal closures. LC-2 and LC-2A belts utilize plastic closure thus deemed unsuitable for use in air-lifting harnesses.珍しい例を除けばスターボには大別して３世代の構造が確認されており、ピストルベルトがハーネス本体に縫い付けられている１stパターン、ベルトが選べる２ndパターン、戦後に安全性を考慮して再びベルト縫い付けに戻り、肩への装備重量負荷軽減のために肩部分のハーネスにフォームパッドが織り込まれた３rdパターンがある。しかしながら、その限定された特殊な用途の為であろうが、基本のデザインは開発当時のものよりほとんど変わっていない。紹介しているものは戦後７０年代から２００７年まで長らく使われた３rdパターンデザインのうち、一見するとLC-1ピストルベルトが装着されているもののように見える。U.S.SOCOMの納品番号によると９５年製であり、LC-2および改良型LC-2Aベルトが既に配備されている年号であることから、より細部を見てみると、このベルトはLC-2AベルトにLC-1型の真鍮製金属バックルを換装してある特殊なものであることが解る。LC-2およびLC-2Aベルトの軽量プラスチックバックルは、この手の空中懸架ハーネスには強度的不安があるとされたのであろう。

STABO harness is now replaced by a yet more stable, safer improved design called "SPIE RIG"（Special Patrol Insertion/Extraction Rig）since 2007. Although designed based off STABOs, the new harness doesn't serve as load-carrying platform itself, yet the current trend in wearing modular tactical vests virtually eliminated such conventional need.
現在スターボハーネスは、より高い空中安定性と安全性を実現した改良ハーネス、スパイ・リグ"（SPIE=Special Patrol Insertion/Extraction）, に2007年度より更新されている。新型ハーネスはスターボをベースとしていながらも、それ自体を戦闘装備プラットフォームとして使用することは出来なくなった、しかし、モジュラーなタクティカルベスト形状の装備を上半身に羽織るという現在トレンディーな装備システムによって、ヨークとピストルベルトを基本とする旧態的な吊り下げ式装備方法はすでに過去のものとなっている。
